Space Optimization for a Small 50 m²
The first step in a compact interior is defining its rhythm, understanding how the space will be used. Living, resting, and today also working, all influence how a space functions.
The key is to clearly identify each function in order to bring both functionality and style, without fragmenting the interior.
Rather than adding walls or going through an expensive renovation process, there are a few design strategies that can help redefine a small living space with clarity and intention.
– Separate spaces with sliding door systems.
Sliding doors allow you to divide areas while preserving light, flow, and flexibility. They can also bring color and character to the interior. Brands like Doors offer elegant and customizable solutions that enhance both function and aesthetics. Movement should feel natural, almost invisible. We used this approach in our La Bomboniera project.
– Use color to define and highlight spaces.
Color can subtly separate functions and give character to specific areas, such as niches or transition zones. It can also be introduced through lighting playing with colored cables or lamps to add depth in a softer, more refined way.
– Choose one strong design element.
Every small space needs a focal point. The first furnishing element you see when entering the home sets the tone for the entire interior. This piece should express the character of the space and connect naturally with the rest of the design, creating a strong and memorable first impression.
– Combine functionality with modular solutions.
Small spaces require intelligent functionality. Modular furniture, such as a modular sofa by Micadoni, allows flexibility without compromising design. Storage also plays a key role: custom-made solutions can transform an interior into a complete and coherent puzzle — for example, a storage unit that integrates a bathroom door, or a wardrobe that incorporates a discreet home office.
